The late singer Aaron Carter is said to have made another attempt to overcome drug addiction in the last few weeks of his life.

As American media reported, the thirty-four-year-old was treated as an outpatient in Los Angeles.

Carter refused friends' requests to spend the night in rehab.

The former child star was found lifeless in the bathtub at his home in Lancaster, near Los Angeles, on Saturday.

Hours later, his brother Nick Carter, a Backstreet Boys singer, blamed addiction and mental disorders for the death on Instagram.

The brothers' relationship fell apart a few years ago when Aaron Carter, a gun collector, became drunk and threatened his siblings and their families.

After his first appearances supporting the Backstreet Boys, the singer became famous in the 1990s with titles such as "Aaron's Party" and "That's How I Beat Shaq".

In recent years, however, Carter has mostly attracted attention with drug confessions, appearances as a porn actor and a tumultuous romance with Melanie Martin.

Ten months ago, the model gave birth to their son Prince, who now lives with his grandparents.
