• Luxury The return of the Orient Express: the mythical original train will once again cross Europe with more glamor than ever

  • From Portugal to Singapore The longest train journey in the world: 13 countries in 21 days

Trains and records have always gotten along.

And if we talk about the Alps, they have been sharing experiences and even a life together for a long time.

So it seems only fitting that to mark the

175th anniversary of Switzerland's first railway

, the Swiss country hasn't hesitated to launch quite a rail show: the world's longest passenger train.

To do this, last weekend it managed to unite 100 wagons with a total of about 3,000 tons and almost two kilometers in length.

The convoy also rode along one of the most spectacular routes in the world.

The famous

Rhaetian Railway

, a narrow-gauge railway wonder opened in 1904. It links the city of

Thusis with St. Moritz

and regularly runs two of the world's most sought-after scenic trains: the

Bernina Express

and the

Glacier Express

, which with their wide Large windows and luxury services across the Alps delight the most demanding passengers.

Such is the technical audacity and the beauty of the landscape that this layout, with its

55 bridges and 39 tunnels

, was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2008.

The longest passenger train in the world, thus certified by Guinness World Records, covered

25 kilometers

of the route in just one hour.

Specifically in the section between Preda and Alvaneu, crossing the famous

Landwasser

viaduct , which crosses a gorge 136 meters long at a height of 65 metres.

A true work of art, in addition to the most photographed corner of this line in the

canton of Graubünden

.

In total, the convoy crossed 22 tunnels and 48 bridges, zigzagging over a drop of 790 meters.

"After intense preparation, we are delighted to have achieved this record. We have been able to present a

fascinating and innovative

mountain railway to the whole world ", congratulated Renato Fasciati, director of RhB, shortly after the establishment of the world record.

RhB is the second largest railway company in Switzerland, after SBB-CFF-FFS.

According to

CNN

, the record is surprising as it is a

narrow gauge railway

.

"The previous record holders for the world's longest passenger train - Belgium and, before that, the Netherlands - used standard gauge tracks and flat landscapes."

It is not, of course, the only record held by the Swiss country.

Whether it's the world's steepest funicular (743 meters up the Stoos takes four to seven minutes to complete), the tallest and most luxurious cable car, or its collection of scenic trains, Switzerland has pioneered the Time to conquer the Alps through engineering.
