A “crime” shook Iraq.. A woman burns her pregnant daughter-in-law because of cleaning fish

In an incident that sparked a wide wave of controversy and anger in Iraq, Banaz Farouk, 21, who is pregnant and married for 7 months, was burned by her mother-in-law, in cooperation with her husband, in the city of Kirkuk in northern Iraq, and the woman is currently between life and death in the hospital.

According to local media, the wife suffered severe burns, amounting to 80%, and according to the doctors supervising her condition, she is in a "very critical" situation, and her life and the life of her fetus are in danger as a result of the burning incident that she was exposed to.

The media quoted the victim’s family as saying that the cause of the accident was that her mother-in-law had asked her to clean the fish and prepare it for cooking, but she told her that she was not good at that, so she poured gasoline on the ground and burned her daughter-in-law by using the lighter.

The horrific crime sparked outrage in the Iraqi social networks, where the pioneers stressed that the atrocity of what happened requires the most severe penalties to be imposed on the victim's husband and mother-in-law, as it is considered a clear attempted murder.

While her family indicated that the security services arrested the accused husband, the victim's mother-in-law is still hidden from view.

"Sky News" quoted the Iraqi Ministry of Interior statistics for the year 2021, which stated that 873 cases of domestic violence were recorded, distributed by 786 cases of violence against women and 87 cases of violence against children.
