His attack on a herd came to an abrupt halt.

A wolf was shot by a pair of wolf-hunting lieutenants on Wednesday evening in Frasne (Doubs), as part of a "defense shot" provided for by law, the prefecture announced on Thursday.

The shooting was triggered Wednesday around 8:30 p.m. when the wolf "was observed in a situation of attack on the herd" of a breeder "on a plot where a herd had been predated on the night of October 24 to 25", indicates the prefecture in a press release.

This defensive firing had been authorized by the prefect of Doubs Jean-François Colombet by an order taken after the previous predation and it "is therefore perfectly compliant" with the provisions of the ministerial order of October 23, 2020, according to the same source.

She-wolf shot at the end of September

At the end of September, a wolf had already been killed as part of a defensive fire in the Doubs, in Longevilles-Mont-d'Or, a town near the border with Switzerland, about twenty km south-east of Frasne.

In addition, a week ago, on October 20, a team from France 3 Bourgogne-Franche-Comté had filed a complaint for "degradation of equipment" after the aggression of a team of journalists by breeders on the sidelines of a report devoted to an authorized shooting on the wolf in the Doubs.

In France, the gray wolf, which has returned on its own from Italy, has experienced favorable demographic dynamics for ten years, and the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) estimates its population at between 826 and 1,016 individuals.
