The petition from the Insee Pas Fini collective had collected more than 18,000 signatures on Monday.

A rally was organized in front of the town hall last Wednesday to demand the rejection of the state project.

Some point to the heavy environmental impact.

According to the collective, the carbon footprint of such a demolition corresponds to 6,000 tonnes of CO2.

Then comes the ecological cost of rebuilding a 36,000 m2 building.

The budget was estimated at 160 million euros in 2019-2020.

It may have since exploded due to inflation, critics say.

For others, the pollution problem is the most important.

The demolition could release dust containing crystalline silica.

Rehabilitation would also not be possible due to the presence of asbestos.

The municipality adopted a wish unanimously - minus six abstentions - asking for the interruption of work and exchanges with the government.
