A lay judge trial was held for the father of a couple accused of causing the death of their two-month-old daughter, who was seriously injured in Misato, Saitama Prefecture, without taking her to a hospital for about a month. The Saitama District Court sentenced him to 10 years in prison.

Hiroki Kanai (31), an unemployed defendant in Misato, Saitama Prefecture, along with his wife Azusa (29), had a two-month-old daughter, Kisora, who had a fractured chin and other injuries, making it difficult for her to drink milk. He was accused of causing death by abandoning a person in charge of protection because he did not take him to the hospital even though he was doing so.

The defendant admitted to the indictment, and the prosecution demanded 11 years in prison, while the defendant's lawyer argued that 7 years in prison was appropriate.

In the judgment on the 24th, presiding judge Kazu Kitamura of the Saitama District Court said, ``The defendant saw her daughter bleeding from her mouth multiple times, and was aware that she had not gained weight. I was optimistic and tried to breastfeed with the wrong method of pouring milk directly into my mouth, and I did not receive a doctor's diagnosis.
