During this year's edition of the book fair in Frankfurt, the war-torn Ukraine is in focus.

On Thursday, a recorded speech by Volodymyr Zelensky was shown in which he appeals to writers to write about Russia's invasion.

- Instead of importing culture, Russia imports death.

So I ask you, do everything you can to make people aware of the horror that Russia has brought to Ukraine, he said in the speech.

In terms of the number of participating publishers, the event in Frankfurt is the world's largest book fair and attracts close to 300,000 visitors.

On Saturday, the wife of the Ukrainian president, Olena Zelenska, is also expected to visit the fair.

At the same time, Russian institutions, which usually represent the country at the fair, have been ported, and instead prominent opponents of Vladimir Putin will be given space for their messages.
