The municipal council of Chambéry (Savoie) voted last Monday for a wish in favor of the prohibition of all animals in traveling circuses.

Through this initiative, the municipality hopes to raise awareness among the legislator in order to change the regulations;

explains France 3 Auvergne Rhône-Alpes.

Other municipalities have already voted similar wishes, such as Montpellier, Grenoble, Trappes or Villepreux.

“Through this wish, the City wishes to continue in its ambition to set an example in favor of animal welfare and proposes that this ban on the staging of animals in circuses, depriving them of their dignity, be extended to all types of animals, whether wild, domestic, farm or other", is it indicated in the text presented to the municipal council and relayed by our colleagues.

Change the law

A law of November 30, 2021 provides for the end of the presence of wild animals in circuses, for 2028. But Chambéry wants to go further, by targeting species such as cats, dogs, camels or reptiles.

Even if the wish voted on Monday has no legal value, the municipality promises to be attentive when installing traveling circuses on its territory.
