The American police have arrested a social worker who her friends call "Snow White" because of her exaggerated love for animals and insects, especially since she lives with 100,000 cockroaches inside her home.

Karen Keys, 51, also kept about 300 animals in conditions described as “brutal,” including 118 rabbits, 150 birds, seven turtles, three snakes and 15 cats, among others, all of which were in her house.

On Tuesday, officials said that when rescuers entered the house, they had to put on special suits to combat the "toxic" odors that permeated the house.

The newspaper reported that the smell was so bad that animal rescuers were advised not to stay inside for more than a few minutes due to the floor being covered in animal excrement.

The woman, a social worker, began raising suspicions earlier this month when firefighters were called to the property in New York, where she also met her clients and patients.

The complaint appeared to come from those who couldn't stand the smell wafting from her home, NBC New York reports.

A friend of the arrested, Danielle Ward, stated that Keys "found out that a pet store was closing so she went to rescue the animals because she didn't want them to be homeless.

And when she found an animal that was sick or needed a home, she went and took it under her wing.”

But Ufolk County Prosecutor Jade Pinter commented that the house's condition represented "a horrific living environment that no animal or human should tolerate."

Prosecutors emphasized that all the animals were expected to survive.

However, several groups of animal specialists were called in to help contain her large sleeve situation.

The judiciary has charged Keys with several counts, including cruelty to animals, which could be sent to prison if convicted.
