Twelve passengers were injured in severe turbulence during a flight from Madrid to Buenos Aires.

Nine were treated after landing at Ezeiza Airport near the Argentine capital, airline Aerolíneas Argentinas said on Wednesday.

Three others were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Apparently, hand luggage had fallen out of the compartments, it said.

The newspaper "La Nacíon" published photos of passengers with bandages on their heads and noses.

The article quotes a Spanish passenger who wrote on Twitter: "I was one of the worst affected and may have a broken nasal septum." She hit her head on the ceiling.

According to La Nación, among the passengers treated at the hospital was a 73-year-old man with a head injury without loss of consciousness and a lacerated scalp.

The Airbus 330 had encountered turbulence over the Atlantic near Brazil.

271 passengers and 13 crew members were on the plane of the Argentine airline Aerolíneas Argentinas.

There was no major damage to the machine, the airline said.
