• The prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes has announced the maintenance of measures restricting the use of water until November 15.

  • Some areas of the department thus remain at the crisis stage, with in particular the ban on night and day watering of green spaces and sports grounds, the 60% reduction in consumption and/or withdrawals for industrial uses and the partial ban on watering golf courses.

  • Until the end of October, Météo-France forecasts a “warmer than normal seasonal” scenario.

Faced with an “exceptional” drought situation, the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes announced on Tuesday the maintenance of measures to restrict the use of water until November 15.

The balance of the water recharge season in the department, between September 2021 and March 2022, "is very deficient over the entire territory", indicated the prefecture in a press release, with a precipitation deficit of 40% to 60% compared to normal.

This is, specifies the prefecture, "the second rank of the lowest values since 1959".

In September, rainfall was still largely below normal, down 42% from normal.

The localized rainfall since August has made it possible to "temporarily relieve the levels of certain superficial watercourses" but "do not make it possible to reverse the underlying trend in the long term".

A “warmer than normal” scenario until the end of October

In addition, adds the prefecture, until the end of October Météo-France forecasts a scenario "warmer than the seasonal normal".

On the basis of these elements, as well as observations of the flow rates and levels of the water tables, the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes Bernard Gonzalez decided to renew the water restriction measures, some of which have been in force since the end of May. , until November 15.

Part of the department, including the catchment areas of Estéron, Brague, Paillons or Roya, thus remains at the crisis stage, with in particular the ban on night and day watering of green spaces and sports grounds, a 60% reduction in consumption and/or withdrawals for industrial use and a partial ban on watering golf courses.

On Monday, the Bouches-du-Rhône prefecture also announced that it would extend until December 1 the measures restricting the use of water affecting Marseille and its region, due to a "low level of resources" still "worrying" in the face of a "persistent" drought.
