"There is no need."
Few sentences contain a deeper message in so few words.
Because, behind these three words, there is hidden, among many other things, a potpourri of customs and/or formalisms and/or beliefs that we abide by or take for granted without really knowing why and, what is even worse, even if they kick us out .
One of those things, at least to my understanding, is having to
wear high heels to be 'elegant' or 'more sexy and attractive'
.
Because, as
Queen Letizia
has shown during her recent state trip to Germany, you can be just as 'elegant' (or more) and even be 'more sexy and attractive' (or more) with
a flat shoe
which, what is even more important,
is more comfortable and healthy for our feet
.
Forced by that Morton's neuroma she suffers from, the Queen has stepped down from hers, usually in dizzying heels to give her aching feet a rest.
But, beyond the unquestionable discomfort, are high heels so bad for your health?
Raúl Ramos Blanco, specialist in Biomechanics and Foot Surgery at Podoactiva (Olavide, Madrid), clarifies it for us.
"
It is not bad to wear heels
, but, as in everything in life, the bad thing is the excess. What is not recommended is to use them
above a certain height, every day and for too long a time,
nor wear them
if we are going to walk too much
or, obviously, to do activities for which they are not designed".
What is that height that should not be exceeded?
"You shouldn't wear heels whose difference in height between the heel and the forefoot area
exceeds approximately 5 cm.
And, if we want to wear them higher, it would be better if they had
platforms in the forefoot
to smooth out the unevenness."
It is also important, he continues, that "the heel is
wide
so that it provides us with a certain stability in the heel and thus avoids some type of injury".
What happens if we do the opposite of what Dr. Ramos is prescribing?
"The abuse of high-heeled shoes harms us at different points. Firstly, by having less stable support, we are more predisposed to
suffering injuries
such as ankle or knee sprains, foot sprains, etc. Likewise, it can produce
tendinopathies
(inflammation of the tendons) in the Achilles tendon or in the finger extensors, to give two examples".
But there is still more.
"Our body is designed to support
60% of our weight on the heels and the remaining 40% on the metatarsal area
. By wearing high heels, we carry a greater percentage than would correspond to the forefoot whose tissues, not being prepared for this, they will suffer until they
generate different ailments
".
Dr. Ramos explains that "the Queen's injury, Morton's neuroma, falls within the group of ailments known as metatarsalgia and, basically, it is
a fibrosis that originates around the nerve that passes between the third and fourth metatarsals
. It is produced by the continuous irritation caused
by 'forcing' the nerve to pass anatomically
through a space that, as a result of the use of narrow shoes and high heels, narrows ".

Queen Letizia raises the bar with the looks of her state trip to Germany
Despite what has been said, Doña Letizia's illness "
has nothing to do with Rafa Nadal's injury
, who suffers from
dysplasia in the growth of a foot bone called the scaphoid
that usually originates in childhood but is manifests itself upon reaching adulthood. That is, the Queen's is a nerve injury and Nadal's, a bone one."
Although Morton's neuroma "doesn't hurt at rest," if you wear narrow, high-heeled shoes for walking, it produces a kind of cramp.
"The patient notices an
unpleasant whiplash
that goes from the metatarsal region to the fingers, which is exactly the course of that nerve."
To mitigate it, there are
different types of treatments
.
"You can start, logically, with a
change of shoes
or with the
use of insoles
to modify the biomechanics of the foot. If that doesn't work, you can opt for
injections
of different anti-inflammatory substances or others that can numb the affected area."
Before resorting to the surgical solution,
radiofrequency
is also being used : "Through some needles that have terminals expressly designed to emit a radiofrequency, an ablation of that nervous structure is produced, by means of an
increase in temperature up to 80 degrees
, putting it to sleep.
and stopping the pain.
With all this information on the table, it is clear that, indeed, "there is no need" to wear high-heeled shoes... at least, for a long time and if they exceed 5 cm in height and if we are going to walk. look, make them look
more 'elegant' or 'more sexy and attractive'
.
