In Yatsuo Town, Toyama City, next year's calendar making using the traditional craft "Yao Washi" is at its peak.

Yao Washi, which is durable and has vivid patterns, has a history of being used for wrapping paper for medicines since the Edo period. At a workshop in Yao-cho, Toyama City, calendars have been made using this washi for over 70 years. going.

The process is all done by hand, from making washi paper to coloring, and the finishing coloring work is at its peak at this time of year.

Next year's calendar is a reprint of the one designed in 1950 by Keisuke Serizawa, a Living National Treasure dyeing artist.

Then, when the glue dried, the craftsmen carefully applied each color using a brush while applying paper patterns.

Ms. Mika Uemura, who is in charge of coloring, said, "Since it is hand-painted, I think you can enjoy the differences and tastes of each craftsman. I want you to turn the calendar and feel the season."

A total of 1,200 copies of the Yao Washi calendar will be produced by the end of next month and will be sold at folk craft stores and select shops nationwide.
