The prefect of Puy-de-Dôme issued a new decree on Wednesday concerning the obligation of snow tires this winter.

The administrative court of Clermont-Ferrand had indeed challenged in July a first prefectural decree which made them compulsory on all the roads of the department, reports La Montagne.

This time, winter equipment will be compulsory between November 1 and March 31 to travel on the roads and highways of 161 municipalities in Puy-de-Dôme, which has 464. Motorists can opt for 4 snow tires or a removable device (chains or snow socks).

Signage in place

Are concerned: light and utility vehicles, motorhomes, heavy goods vehicles and coaches.

Vehicles equipped with studded tires are exempt.

The altimetry and the frequency of snow episodes were taken into account to designate the municipalities concerned.

Signage will be in place to alert motorists.

Offenders risk a 5th category fine.

But the police will first show pedagogy, assured the prefecture of Puy-de-Dôme.
