Five new schools in Val-d'Oise offer free breakfasts to students two mornings a week in the canteen.

The operation, already tested since the spring of 2022 in five colleges in the priority education network (REP) and reinforced priority education network (REP +), therefore now concerns ten schools, reports

.

Nineteen schools were candidates to participate in the program, which grants each establishment funding of around 4,000 euros annually, renewable once.

The aim is to prevent students from going to school on an empty stomach, and also to make them aware of the importance of the first meal of the day.

Sustain the operation locally

According to the head of the catering and taste education department of the county council, the long-term idea is to perpetuate the system where it exists, via partnerships with bakeries or stores.

The latter could, for example, give their unsold items to establishments.

Consuming a balanced breakfast allows students to be more attentive and calm during the day.

They also avoid many ailments, especially headaches and digestive problems.

As part of the operation, a dietician works with young people to make them aware of balanced diets.
