A multidisciplinary study carried out by around twenty French researchers and published in the

American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine

has succeeded in isolating four profiles of people more likely to suffer from asthma than the others, reports BFMTV on Tuesday.

These are actually four combinations of specific exposures that have been linked to an increased risk of asthma, three in children and one in adults.

To achieve this result, the team of researchers drew up the profile of nearly 21,000 French people.

Four aspects of their life were analyzed in particular: socio-economic factors, the environment of these people at the start of their life and at the time of the study, and more generally their way of life.

Three combinations in children

Thus, it appeared that it was first of all those who were exposed "to heavy passive smoking during early childhood" (from 0 to 6 years old) and who grew up surrounded by dogs who would present a greater risk of smoking. 'asthma.

This is a paradoxical result, since two previous studies had shown, on the contrary, that being around dogs could reduce the risk of asthma.

Another combination of factors with greater risk than others in children: premature births or cesarean births associated with a long stay in a crèche in an urban environment.

Last association among the youngest: belonging to a family of more than three children and having been breastfed.

A final factor that had already been pointed out by another study.

A study to qualify

For adults, the combination of factors that stands out is the unbalanced diet associated with smoking.

Diet would actually play a less significant effect on asthma here than overweight.

This study, which focuses on a disease that is constantly increasing in Western countries, does not, however, prove a causal link between these combinations and the development of asthma.

New analyzes in this direction will soon be carried out.
