Botticelli against Gaultier… This is the situation in which the brand founded by one of the legends of fashion in France finds itself.

The Jean Paul Gaultier house is indeed accused by the Uffizi museum in Florence of having used

The Birth of Venus

, an iconic work by Sandro Botticelli produced in 1484-1485, without the necessary authorization.

“The fashion house used the image of the masterpiece kept at the museum (…) to make several clothes, of which it published photos on its site and social networks”, can we read in a press release relayed by

Le Figaro

.

And to support their accusations, screenshots have been shared, where we see indeed several clothes created by the brand, where the image of Venus appears.

The offending pieces are part of the “Le musée” capsule collection, which was presented last August.

Illegitimate

Not only did the fashion house, whose artistic director Florence Tétier took over since the designer's retirement, not have asked for any authorization to produce this type of clothing, but, if we are to believe the Uffizi of Florence, it obviously chose not to react to multiple requests to regularize the situation.

“The letter sent in April to Jean Paul Gaultier was ignored.

We have launched a legal action providing, in addition to the removal of the "illegitimate" clothing, a claim for damages, "the statement added.

Sandro Botticelli is considered one of the greatest geniuses of the Italian Renaissance, alongside Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and even Raphaël, who are also exhibited in the Uffizi in Florence.
