After the Swedish Academy's announcement of the year's Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday, French media have been filled with words of praise.

French President Emanuel Macron is among those hailing the announcement by Annie Ernaux.

On Twitter, Macron writes that her novels carry the country's collective and intimate memories.

And that Ernaux is a voice for women's freedom who now joins "the great Nobel circle of French literature".

Another who has reacted is the acclaimed author and French shooting star Édouard Louis.

On Facebook, he writes: "It's a good day for class struggle literature."

Most winners

France already has 16 Nobel laureates in literature and is thus the country with the most laureates.

Annie Ernaux is the second laureate, after Patrick Modiano in ten years, but the country's first woman.

Despite massive praise in the French media, there has also been some mixed criticism in the home country.

These have largely been about Annie Ernaux's political involvement.

Ernaux has clearly taken a stand on several issues, including for the yellow vests and the pension strike in France.

The French daily Le Monde sourly states that Ernaux was active in radical left-wing circles.

France's ambassador to Sweden has also underlined that Ernaux is a political writer.
