• From an idea that came from teleworking together, ValentineLe Gal and Henri Badel created a Bagal brand.

  • The concept seems new: linking music to the olfactory experience of a candle.

  • In just a few hours on a crowdfunding site, Bagal met his presales goal.

Light a candle while launching a playlist.

Two actions carried out so far separately that Valentine Le Gal and Henri Badel have decided to bring together around a single object: Bagal.

This brand of candles, whose title comes from the compression of the names of the creators, makes it possible to directly link an olfactory experience to a musical moment.

"With the flick of a match, you can have the smells of a candle while having music that matches what you smell thanks to a discreet QR that sends you directly to your favorite listening platform," sums up Henri Badel. .

A concept that they were able to realize in just two days thanks to crowdfunding.

The two friends who live in Paris had this "flash of genius" when they teleworked together two years ago.

“Valentine has long collaborated with labels for the music part of a large television group, comments the co-founder.

For my part, as a designer, I am very attached to decoration and in particular to scented candles.

I have tons of them at home.

So I always had the reflex to light one to concentrate.

»

Very quickly, they realize that their work habits are complementary and that when combined, they allow them to be more productive.

“We then discovered that there were the same benefits in music as in perfume,” continues Valentine.

After further research, we also saw that there was no existing brand that would combine these two experiences.

We had to share this discovery!

Feel the music and listen to the candle?

After a year of development, the concept of Bagal is born with certain requirements.

“The goal was really to highlight French heritage,” continues Valentine.

The candles are 100% made in France.

We make the container ourselves, by hand, using unique molds that we have developed.

The design, thought out by Henri, takes up the codes of music and is reminiscent of a speaker.

It is also through music that the fragrances of Bagal candles are imagined.

“To make the playlists, we first imagine a universe, a moment that we want to live, says the co-creator.

For example, for the candle that we would light for a cuddly moment, I imagined the characteristics of a piece considered as an aphrodisiac.

Henri completes: “We then go to a Parisian perfume studio with the playlists already thought out and we call on a nose to create this atmosphere with us.

To continue on the example of Valentine, we composed together knowing that the virtues of certain essential oils were also aphrodisiacs.

»

To complete this work in the studio, a team in Grasse, in the Alpes-Maritimes, works directly on the scents.

“All the species are taken there, specify the contractors.

We knew the know-how and we wanted high quality for our concept.

What could be better than the capital of perfume?

!

And then there was this desire to support French heritage.

Another detail: only French artists are represented in the playlists that accompany the candles.

And in addition, Bagal products are “eco-responsible”.

“The eco-resin container is refillable, the wax is made from GMO-free rapeseed, the packaging is biodegradable and the wick is made from organic cotton,” the two friends highlight on their site.

150% of target achieved in 48 hours

In order to “test” their project with the general public, Valentine and Henri first launched a crowdfunding campaign on Ulule and “really find out if the concept was popular”.

It is clear that this is the case.

In less than 24 hours on the site, they had reached their presales goal, a day later they were at 150%.

On Wednesday, they even won first prize from the “Pitch pitch” jury, made up of 3,000 Ulule customers, against six other finalist candidates from the 50 new designers of the week.

At the end of the 15 days of their campaign, the “moments” will be found directly on their site where a dozen other universes are ready to be released.

"Currently, we offer three different experiences, in a classic format of 240 g for 60 hours of burning in connection with a playlist of four to six hours of listening, or in mini-formats, of 70 g and 35 hours of burning, says Henry.

We also developed a tailor-made concept of personification.

It's a very big request that we had, especially to give it as a gift to friends, colleagues or for a particular event.

This summer, for a wedding, we created candles with our playlists and we added that of the newlyweds.

Playlists are also regularly updated.

“We are going to offer the possibility, once a month to customers, to put suggestions, discoveries of the moment.

Of course, I would regulate to be sure that it corresponds to our editorial line, ”assures Valentine.

For a candle in the standard format, the price is 64 euros.

The “discovery” box with three mini-formats is 105 euros.

“A relatively accessible range that can please everyone,” conclude the Parisians.
