After the sinking of two refugee boats in Greek waters, the death toll has increased to 29.

Six bodies were recovered near the island of Kythira off the southern coast of the Peloponnese peninsula, the Greek Coast Guard said on Saturday.

The accidents involving a sailing boat and a rubber dinghy happened on Thursday in stormy weather near Kythira and the island of Lesbos off the Turkish coast in the eastern Mediterranean.

Around 95 people were on board the sailing boat that sank off Kythira.

About 40 people were on the dinghy that sank off Lesbos.

In boats from Lebanon to Greece

Greece is often the first port of call in the EU for migrants from Africa and the Middle East fleeing war and poverty.

In order to avoid patrols in the Aegean, smugglers are increasingly choosing the particularly long and dangerous route in southern Greece.

They let the boats, which are often hardly seaworthy, start in Lebanon - and no longer in Turkey.

In many places in the Aegean there are currently strong winds and waves typical of the season.

Nevertheless, migrants have recently tried to get to Greece or even directly to southern Italy.

The boats are usually hopelessly overcrowded and in poor condition, and serious accidents happen again and again.
