Popular markets and old shops are among the most popular places among different people in the Emirates, as many people are accustomed to visiting these places from time to time, because of the memories and products they carry from the past.

The old shops in the popular markets are a beautiful outlet for many people, because of the products they used to enjoy in their childhood, as these shops, with their small size and presence in ancient places, are a great place to live.

However, it is widely popular among citizens and residents from different emirates.

One of the largest popular markets in Dubai, which is famous for selling women’s clothing and fabrics and abayas in all shapes and colors, as it is famous for its high quality and cheap prices, compared to what is available in modern shops. These markets are not limited to women’s products, fabrics and accessories such as bags and shoes, but rather provide different products, Electronics stores that display all kinds of devices and equipment.

Jaber Al Hammadi - a resident of Abu Dhabi - is keen to visit the old markets, especially those in the city of Sharjah, to buy different products for himself and his children, as he reminds him of the days of the beautiful past, as he used to wander in these markets because of the "good memories" and the beautiful past, he said. "These sweets have another taste, as they remind us of the past and the customs associated with it when we used to buy a variety of these sweets in the past, collect them in a bag and present them to children to celebrate different occasions."

He added: “These sweets remind me of the various occasions that some families celebrated through the so-called (al-Nthur);

Where sweets are collected and spread on children at parties and events, and are also used in some customs of some tribes that spread these sweets on the groom to celebrate his wedding with some paper money as well, which gave a wonderful atmosphere to the celebrations in the past. ”

He explained, "I am still keen to buy these old sweets when I visit these markets, and share them with my children to consolidate these beautiful habits for them as well."

Fresh food and old products

Al Hammadi told "Emirates Today": "It is certain that our food in the past was different and had another taste, as most meals were prepared with natural materials and less harmful than the foods we eat in our time, so when I visit these markets I enjoy a lot eating in restaurants. The popularity that is found in these markets, especially the baked goods sold in popular restaurants and bakeries here, such as “tannour bread” which is characterized by its natural ingredients, and is eaten as soon as it is prepared while it is fresh, and does not contain a lot of sugars.

As for Dr. Ahmed Al-Adb, he told us, when he met him in one of the old shops in Al-Mareijah area in Sharjah, that he likes to buy old products from these markets, such as the “namilts” and “Nakhi” that distinguish these shops from other modern markets.

He added: "I was a resident of this area previously and I am keen to visit it from time to time because it reminds me of childhood days, where nostalgia for childhood days drives me to visit these areas and wander around in their alleys." It is only available in these popular places.”

Male and female citizens also expressed their great happiness when visiting these places, and (Um Ahmed) said: “The presence of these markets and their frequent visits in light of the urbanization and development that we are witnessing today is a wonderful thing that gives me a beautiful feeling that I miss these days, these places remind us of dear people who left us. We were preparing for beautiful days and occasions by shopping from these popular markets.”

She added: "In the past, when we wanted to go shopping, my father used to allocate a day for us to buy our various needs, as we had to count and collect our needs to go to the market once, and we were very happy, as going to the market with my brothers was in a beautiful family atmosphere, especially during holidays and occasions. ».

(Um Abdullah) said: "These markets have a beautiful memory, so I always went to the markets, such as (Frij Al-Marar), accompanied by my mother to buy pieces of fabrics and (mokhawers) that were characteristic of these old markets." And she continued: "I enjoy a lot when we go to the market now." To buy fabrics for me and my sisters from the old markets.”

He said (Mohammed - 56 years): "With the passage of time and the development of places, I find myself very happy when visiting these ancient markets, as I used to and still enjoy the simplest things that exist in these markets in particular."

He added: "These markets are distinguished from modern markets by the presence of alleys or "skik", as it is called in the local dialect, where each "railroad" is characterized by a certain type of different products such as utensils, clothes and various products that carry beautiful memories from the past."

He concluded by saying, "Wandering around the old areas such as Shindagha and other neighborhoods reminds me of the good old days."
