By rejecting, on 29 September 2022, an amendment concerning access to territorial waters by other Member States, the Council of the European Union rejected the proposal to ban demersal seine fishing in the English Channel.
This fishing technique is however controversial because in addition to causing damage by scraping the seabed, it leads to many catches of unwanted animals, at the risk of reducing their populations.
A fishing area equivalent to the surface of Paris
However, some French regions have already banned this technique of deploying at sea a funnel net several hundred meters long – the famous seine net.
Once it reaches the seabed, cables on each side are pulled to close the device.
For its promoters, the demersal seine saves energy and makes fishing “more efficient”: in a single day, five boats using this technique can actually fish on an area equivalent to Paris!
