The city of Nîmes was to provide residents with an ephemeral ice rink on the forecourt of the arenas, from December 17 to January 1.

She finally changed her mind and decided to abandon a popular animation which brings together between 4,500 and 5,000 people each year.

“But, given the rising cost of energy and the environmental impact of such equipment, it would not be responsible for maintaining it.

I therefore decided to remove the ice rink from the program of Christmas festivities, ”explains Jean-Paul Fournier, the mayor (LR) of Nîmes.

"A signal for the youngest"

Rising energy costs are not the only motivation for this decision.

There is also climate change.

"With the milder temperatures of recent years, the symbol of an open-air ice rink really raises the question of the responsibility of the city in the signal it sends, especially to the youngest", underlines Frédéric Pastor, deputy delegate to the Festivities.
