Ultima Online is known as the world's first large Massive multiplayer online role-playing game, MMORPG.

In September, the game celebrated 25 years - still with an active group of players remaining.

One of the most famous MMORPG moments in history occurred on August 9, 1997 when Lord British, an "immortal" king of the Ultima universe, was suddenly assassinated as he was about to bid farewell to the players before the end of the game's testing phase.

"gaming romance"

One of those who remembers the incident is the gaming site Gamereactor's editor-in-chief Petter Hegevall.

- It expanded my entire thinking about what a game could be.

The king went outside the castle walls and then someone managed to kill him even though it was not going to work.

It's gaming romance in a way, he says.

Lord British constant victim

It wasn't the first time Lord British was killed in the Ultima universe.

About ten titles are part of the game series, and in every single one players have tried to kill him.

Despite increasingly strict measures by the game developers to make him immortal, players have often found creative ways to bypass the protections.

But it was only in Ultima Online that the virtual killing took place in front of an audience in an online world.

Hear the game's creator Richard Garriott, who himself ran Lord British, tell what went wrong in the clip.
