Getaway Five towns of Burgos at the top of the most beautiful in Spain
Agrotourism From military barracks to the most zen (and beautiful) rural hotel in Menorca
More than 350 artisan stalls,
Cervantine sewing or historical dance workshops,
period costume competitions, parades inspired by the exemplary novel
Elceloso Extremadura
,
storytelling, cannon salutes
... These are some of the proposals of the traditional Cervantine Market that next week (from October 7 to 12) will transfer the Golden Age to the main streets of Alcalá de Henares.
The common denominator of the
hundred daily activities (600 in total)
that will take place in the UNESCO World Heritage city is none other, of course, than its most illustrious son,
Miguel de Cervantes
, born there on September 29 of 1547, according to the chronicles, official and no.
The dates of the event coincide, however, with his baptism, which was held on October 9 in the now defunct church of
Santa María la Mayor,
next to the current Plaza de Cervantes, the epicenter of the celebration framed in the Cervantes Week and declared
a Fiesta of National Tourist Interest.
"All the content revolves around the
local holiday of October 9,
the day that prays in the
writer's baptismal certificate,
which the City Council guards thanks to the fact that it was ceded to us by Father Manuel Palero, who this year will receive a well-deserved tribute", explains Javier Rodríguez Palacio, mayor of the so-called Complutense city.
Parades will take place throughout the city.
It is not just another period market, but rather one of the most important thematic events in Europe, bringing together nearly
1,000 people
in its organization.
From the artisans of the street stalls to the actors of the
27 theater groups
involved.
From the chefs who recover the
delicacies of the 16th and 17th centuries
to the designers and tailors of the dozens of suits inspired in detail by those times.
Without forgetting the designer of the poster for the current edition of the festival,
Max Hierro,
who has conceived an original Don Quixote, the masterpiece of Miguel de Cervantes.
Historical recreation in the streets of Alcalá.
Other characters created by the author of
El colloquio de los perro
or
La Gitanilla
, such as
Dulcinea,
Blanca Luna, Princess Micomicona, Vidriera or
Rinconete y Cortadillo,
will also be present in different settings in Alcalá de Henares, whether they are the squares of San Diego, de los Santos Ninos or Palacio or
Calle Mayor
, San Juan or Cardenal Sandoval y Rojas.
Parades, cane games and music
This year, the historical re-enactment of the
Campamentos de Tercio is also planned,
where the spectator will be able to enjoy demonstrations of cane games or the
sbandieratoris parades,
the ancient art of the game of flags of Italian origin.
There will be no shortage of mythical
knight tournaments,
which will be held in the walled area of the Archbishop's Palace.
Traditional kitchen stalls.SHUTTERSTOCK
The Cervantes Week gives for more, since the Book Fair
will also take place in parallel
on Calle Libreros with 19
stands,
as well as the VI Cervantino Poetic Meeting,
the Cervantes train
, the representation of hors d'oeuvres on the Escolapias staircase , the Alcalá Gastronómica and
Ancient Music
contests in Gilitos and the public reading of Don Quixote in the Corral de Comedias.
