The East Dongting Lake wetland in Yueyang, Hunan Province is rich in biological resources. It is an important wintering place, habitat and breeding ground for migratory birds in Northeast Asia, as well as an important habitat and breeding ground for elk and finless porpoise.

In recent years, in accordance with the Special Implementation Plan for the Treatment of Ecological and Environmental Impacts in the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River for the Follow-up Work of the Three Gorges (2011-2014), Hunan East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve has implemented a project to build and improve the protected area, which has improved the effectiveness of the protected area. The ability to protect and manage the damaged wetland ecosystem has been restored, the habitat of birds has been improved, the biological resources of East Dongting Lake have been effectively restored, and the ecological environment has been continuously improved. It has built an ecological homeland where migratory birds fly freely, elk run freely, and people and birds have a harmonious match.
