The total expenditure of local governments nationwide last fiscal year was about 133 trillion yen, the second largest after the previous fiscal year due to the ballooning expenses for measures against the new coronavirus.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has compiled the financial results of 1788 local governments, including prefectures and municipalities nationwide, for the previous fiscal year and the 3rd year of Reiwa.

According to this, the total expenditure was 133.4 trillion yen, which was 1.4 trillion yen less than the previous fiscal year, which was the largest ever.

The cost of the new corona countermeasures was used for cooperation money for restaurants that cooperated with shortened business hours, and for setting up vaccination venues, but according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, most of the financial resources are borne by the government. Therefore, there is no significant impact on local government finances.

In addition, as a result of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications examining the financial situation of each local government based on the settlement of accounts, it was found that Yubari City in Hokkaido, which has been reconstructed under the control of the national government since 2006, is in a financially bankrupt state. Alone, there have been no local governments facing financial bankruptcy for the eighth straight year.
