and winner of a Grammy award, died on Wednesday at the age of 59, according to

Variety

magazine .

The artist was visiting a friend in Los Angeles and went to the bathroom but did not come out, revealed the

TMZ

newspaper and collected DPA.

When the friend went to check on

Coolio

, he found him unconscious on the ground, according to the newspaper.

Emergency services declared him dead at the scene.

Coolio's cause of death remains unclear, but his representative has explained that aides believe he died of cardiac arrest.

Born Artis Leon Ivey Jr. on August 1, 1963, in Pennsylvania, Coolio moved to California and

joined hip-hop band WC and the Maad Circle in 1991

.

Later, he started his solo career in 1994 with the album
