The controversy swells in Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales) where the mayor, Louis Aliot, (National Rally) plans to rename an esplanade Pierre Sergent.

As France Info reports, it is not to the taste of the opposition and anti-racism associations, which point the finger at the course of this historical figure.

Indeed, Pierre Sergent was head of the Organization of the Secret Army (OAS), a far-right terrorist group that supported French Algeria in the 1960s. "We are here in an attempt to rehabilitate", denounced the president of the association SOS Racisme, evoking the dozens of victims of the OAS.

SOS Racisme denounces an "apology for terrorism"

Contacted by radio, the RN mayor of Perpignan defended himself by evoking "the fact that he was a resistant, that he wore the yellow star in solidarity with the persecuted Jews at that time".

Not enough to convince SOS Racisme, which sent a letter to the prefecture to request the cancellation of the decision of the municipality, evoking an "apology for terrorism".

According to her, Louis Aliot is currently campaigning to become president of the RN, hence this "electoralist gesture".
