The island of Bréhat (Côtes d'Armor) wants to fight against the proliferation of stray cats.
Too numerous, these animals represent a danger for the biodiversity on the island, explains Olivier Carré, mayor of Bréhat.
"Many species of birds" are thus threatened, said the elected official with France 3 Bretagne.
Help for cat owners
To solve the problem, the municipality will first organize a census of cats by identifying those that belong to an inhabitant and the others.
The municipality will then offer aid to owners residing on the island only: 30 euros for identification by chip and tattoo and 50 euros for sterilization.
The operation has already proven itself on other Breton islands such as Ouessant, Molène or even Sein, reports the regional channel.
