Representing Sharjah, "World Book Capital 2019", Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of the International Publishers Association, signed in the Polish city of Wroclaw the charter of the World Book Capitals Network, embodying the emirate's vision to enhance book participation by achieving comprehensive and sustainable development in various countries of the world.

The signing of the charter is an important step to support the role of the network and motivate its signatories to officially commit to its initiatives and efforts. The title in organizing book and reading-related events, opening the way for them to benefit from previous programs to promote a culture of reading, research and learning around the world, and to improve the organization of future cultural events.

On the sidelines of the signing, Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi met with representatives of the World Book Capitals Network, and expressed her happiness with the great efforts made by each world book capital to support the culture of reading and overcome challenges to achieve this goal.

She particularly commended the efforts of the former president of the International Publishers Association, Perret Vicens, who launched the "World Book Capital" initiative in 2001 with the support of UNESCO.

Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, during a speech to the delegations of the participating cities, reviewed the experience of the "Sharjah World Book Capital 2019" program, noting that the emirate succeeded in benefiting from the lessons imposed by the "Covid-19" pandemic to enhance cooperation between the various cities and authorities concerned with the book, pointing out That the emirate's experience could constitute a model for developing the work of the World Book Capitals Network.

She said: "Sharjah continues its commitment to support the network to build a global community that shares the same goals, and bears a common commitment to instilling a culture of reading."

Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, as part of her responsibility as President of the International Publishers Association, stressed the union's commitment to support the World Book Capitals Network, to achieve common goals aimed at consolidating the role of writers in future societies.

She expressed her desire to work with the participating delegations and with UNESCO to advance the initiative and make it a global movement that elevates societies through reading.

Third meeting

The meeting of the World Book Capitals Network in Wroclaw is the third of its kind, after the network's first meeting in the "House of Wisdom" in Sharjah last year, in the presence of 16 representatives of the cities holding the title of "World Book Capital" awarded by UNESCO, while the second meeting was held in the Georgian capital. Tbilisi last April.
