Sarah Paulson has been cast by HBO Max to play on-screen guru Gwen Shamblin.

It will be an adaptation of the documentary series

The Way Down

produced by the same platform and which looks back on the journey of the founder of the Remnant Fellowship Church, a cult in which she offered a slimming diet with Eucharistic sauce.

Deceased since, Gwen Shamblin has been accused of physical and psychological abuse as well as sectarian practices as pointed out by Deadline.

A disturbing death

In addition to starring, Sarah Paulson will serve as executive producer on the series, alongside Michelle Dean, Ross Dinerstein and Chrissy Teigen.

Airing from September 2021,

The Way Down

was a hit, quickly becoming the most viewed documentary on HBO Max.

A public interest which will have been partly fueled by the disturbing disappearance of Gwen Shamblin in a plane crash at the time of the broadcast, pushing the platform to order two additional episodes to relate this mysterious apotheosis.

It remains to be seen whether the fictionalized version of the story with Sarah Paulson will enjoy the same success.
