On Thursday, the Intermediate People's Court of Changchun City, Jilin Province, announced its verdict against Fu Chenghua, former Minister of Justice of the People's Republic of China and former Deputy Minister of Public Security of the People's Republic of China, in a corruption case.

"Fu Chenghua was sentenced to death for bribery, suspended for two years," a statement said.

The court found that the former minister used his official position to receive bribes for personal gain, favoring individuals in doing business, and "concealing evidence of his younger brother's alleged crimes."

According to investigations, Fu Chenghua took bribes of more than 117 million yuan, which is equivalent to about 16.5 million dollars.

It was reported that the defendant pleaded guilty and expressed remorse, and also returned the illegally acquired money.

The court ruled that after a two-year reprieve, the death sentence could be commuted to life imprisonment without the right to parole.

The former minister served as deputy head of the Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China from 2013 to 2018, and served as Minister of Justice from 2018 to 2020.
