• This summer, Sandrine Rousseau had panicked the web and several political figures by associating barbecue and "symbol of virility".

  • Ifop looked into the question and carried out a study to find out the gender relations of red meat lovers.

  • The result is clear: meat lovers are more sensitive to different sexist stereotypes than the average French.

The more red meat a man eats, the more sexist he is?

Following the controversy aroused, at the end of August, by the remarks of the ecologist deputy, Sandrine Rousseau, associating barbecue and “symbol of virility”, Ifop wanted to know more about the profile of the “viandard”.

In the study carried out for the “Darwin Nutrition” Observatory and published by

Le Parisien

on Wednesday, Ifop deciphers the gender relations of meat lovers.

The answers of the sample of 2000 men representative of the population are so salient that this conclusion is essential: sexist ideas are overrepresented in the ranks of the “very meaty”, as they designate themselves.

“Rarely have we seen results with such marked differences.

Personally, I did not expect it”, is also surprised François Kraus, director of the Politics/News department of the Institute.

For example, 21% of men agree with the following statement: “In a couple, it is normal for the woman to do more household activities than the man”.

The approval rating skyrockets to 47% among those who eat red meat daily.

Whatever the sexist stereotype, daily consumers of red meat willingly subscribe to it, far ahead of others who eat less or none at all.

Red meat for strong men

To the statement: "To seduce her, a man must be free to annoy a woman he likes", 38% of daily consumers of beef or game agree.

Against 18% for all French people.

And on these meaty men, Ifop has drawn up a composite portrait of the majority of them.

They are between 25 and 49 years old, come from working classes with modest incomes and are politically at the extremes (left or right).

Practicing Catholics or Muslims, they claim the monopoly of the management of the barbecue, reject feminism.

Another element: the practice of hunting is over-represented there.

“Be careful, almost everyone eats meat.

What is questioned here is the frequency of consumption and the type of meat.

Poultry, for example, is not culturally typical,” specifies François Kraus.

And in almost everyone's mind, man needs more energy.

And what better than red meat for that.

However, men do not necessarily need to eat more meat or protein.

The dietary recommendations are strictly identical, for equal build and physical activity.
