With the death of Elizabeth II, the places have moved in the succession to the British throne but also the responsibilities.

If Prince Charles became king and his wife Camilla, queen consort, he transferred his former titles to his eldest son.

William thus became Duke of Cornwall and Prince of Wales.

And one of the first decisions of the new sovereign was to name his daughter-in-law, Catherine, Princess of Wales.

A meaningful title, since the last to have worn it was none other than Lady Diana.

When the mother of Princes William and Harry died, though Diana was no longer a senior member of the royal family, she had kept her title.

In view of the worldwide shock caused by her death in a car accident, it was understood that no one would be Princess of Wales for a long time.

And certainly not Camilla.

The first one

For those under 20, the current queen consort had, in 1997, at the time of Lady Di's death, the worst reputation: that of home wrecker.

The Princess of Wales had, a few years before, named the mistress of Prince Charles as responsible for the failure of her marriage.

Camilla was then nicknamed “the Rottweiler”.

Things calmed down thanks to cleverly orchestrated communication work.

Charles and Camilla were finally married in 2005, but the wife of the then heir to the throne was only given the title of Duchess of Cornwall, for obvious reasons.

Kate Middleton is therefore the first Princess of Wales since Diana Spencer.

The symbolism is important and the media will not fail to make comparisons between the wife of prince William and the mother of the latter.

The title of Prince of Wales has been granted to the heir to the crown since 1301

The Welsh public, first, had already questioned the mother of George, Charlotte and Louis, during the jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II last June.

The couple, then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, were in Cardiff when a fan told Kate Middleton: “You will be a wonderful princess”.

To which she replied “I am in good hands”, throwing a look at Prince William.

The title of Prince of Wales has been granted to the heir to the British crown since 1301, without however being a formal obligation.

A tradition that does not necessarily appeal to the Welsh.

King Charles III had also had a difficult start in this role, not speaking Welsh, as reported in the series

The Crown

.

For their part, Prince William and his wife have studied the language of the country, but are not really bilingual.

The Welsh people would like their new prince and princess to make a little effort...
