His favorite quote:

"Because it was necessary to obey, yes, to submit to the greatest, to recognize the sacred and tend towards the divine, and it is because contemporary man had neglected it, because he had believed to emancipate himself by desacralizing all thing, that he was causing the collapse of his time.

Why this book?

  • Because it was given a standing ovation by both the public and the critics,

    Victoria Mas's first novel,

    Le bal des folies

, released during the 2019 literary season, had shaken readers with its many qualities.

The next one therefore gave envy, the expectations of the readers being necessarily numerous.

    Maybe too much for some.

  • Because honestly, I found it difficult to get into the story,

to attach myself to the characters, making an imbroglio of them even if they are not more numerous than in others.

I had the impression of flying over the story and not finding any specific hooks.

  • Because I persevered, never giving up on a book

    except in the smallest cases.

And moving on, I finally found my way, or the light maybe (er, sorry for that cheap humor), and devoured its last part.

  • Because I think it's the kind of book that we love

or for which we miss it completely, even if it means abandoning it because we don't like it.

It seems to me that there will be no in-between.

I find it ballsy (pardon the expression) on the part of Victoria Mas, to bet on it when she is only releasing her second book.

For my part, I ended up joining.

    And not just a little!

  • Because if I had to give you just one piece of advice

: even if the book bores you, keep going, persevere!

And the final plot reveal should not only please you, but hook you!

The essentials in 2 minutes

The plot.

Sister Anne is sent on a mission to Roscoff where it turns out that a young boy “saw” the Virgin.

The news quickly made the rounds of the island of Batz and the curious became more and more numerous.

The whole region is turned upside down until the final tragedy.

Characters.

Sister Anne from Paris and the inhabitants of the island of Batz.

Places.

North Finistere.

The time.

Contemporary.

The author.

Victoria Mas is a French writer.

She is the daughter of singer Jeanne Mas.

She has worked in film as a production assistant, scriptwriter and still photographer.

"Le bal des fous", his first novel, was rewarded by obtaining the Renaudot prize for high school students.

This book was read with

stubbornness: If I hadn't finished it, I would have actually missed the best of it.

This comforts me in the idea that it is always better to be stubborn because the good surprise can be revealed.

It is therefore in this final fraction that the author surprised me again and revealed her writing talent.
