Sharjah launches a new global award for copyright workers

The Sharjah Book Authority has launched the Sharjah Copyright Award, and its winners will be announced during the activities of the 12th edition of the Publishers Conference, which will be held before the launch of the Sharjah International Book Fair 2022. The award aims to support copyright experts and enhance opportunities for the growth of their business, as it includes two categories, the first is dedicated For experts in buying and selling translation rights in publishing houses, and the second for independent professionals working with agencies specialized in selling book rights to publishers and licensors.

"Copyright experts play a pivotal role in protecting the intellectual capital of creative writers from any violations, violations, and unauthorized use, in addition to enabling writers to work freely and promote their creative works," said Ahmed bin Rakkad Al-Amri, head of the authority.

He added: “Over the past years, we have been keen to place the sale and purchase of copyright, distribution and translation at the center of our activities, embodying its active role in promoting the publishing industry, and today we look forward to the award being a qualitative addition to the great cultural efforts led by Sharjah at the local and international levels, and enhancing the creative environment.” In Sharjah, it contributes to consolidating the position of the UAE and its role in stimulating creative industries globally.”

Law experts and professionals have the right to nominate themselves, and the authority also gives them the opportunity to be approved by their companies to participate in either of the two categories of the award, as they must submit applications for participation in English, with two certificates, each consisting of 500 words, from the clients with whom the candidate works. At present, to enhance the factors of winning the prize, knowing that participation is open to individuals only, and not to teams.

The award will continue to receive nominations until the seventh of next October, and the names of the winners will be announced during the “Publishers Conference 12” next November.
