Kjell Espmark was born in Strömsund in 1930 and debuted as a poet in 1956 with the poetry collection Mordet på Benjamin, which was followed by Världen through the camera eye (1958) and Mikrokosmos (1961).

He was elected to the Swedish Academy on seat 16 on March 5, 1981, after Elias Wessén, and took his entrance on December 20 of the same year.

In the 1990s, he broadened his fiction writing to also include prose.

Espmark has also sat as a member of, among other things, the board of the Royal Dramatic Theatre, and the Academy's Nobel Committee, which he chaired for 17 years.

He died on Sunday and was 92 years old.

His family confirms this to DN on Sunday morning.
