Mahmoud Al-Hosary, an Egyptian reader and sheikh, was known to people first through the radio, then his fame spread across the horizon, and he made great efforts in serving the Holy Qur’an and left a mark in the fields of advocacy and charitable work in many countries.

Birth and upbringing

Mahmoud Khalil al-Hosari was born on September 17, 1917 in the village of Shubra al-Namla, affiliated to the city of Tanta in the Gharbia Governorate, Egypt.

He spent his childhood between the village of Shubra and the city of Tanta.

Study and training

Al-Hosari joined the kuttab in an early stage of his childhood, and some sources say that he began learning the Holy Qur’an in the village of Shubra when he was 4 years old.

He completed the memorization of the Qur'an at the age of eight, after which he joined the religious institute in Tanta.

He joined the scientific circles in the Tanta Mosque and learned intonation and the science of readings.

At Al-Azhar, he studied the ten narrations of the Holy Qur’an and obtained testimonies and recommendations from the sheikhs, which qualified him to be a reciter and reciter of the Holy Qur’an.

Functions and Responsibilities

  • Al-Hussary joined the Egyptian radio in 1944, and through it people became acquainted with his recitation.

  • In 1948, he became the sheikh of the Maqra'a "Sidi Abdel Metaal" in the city of Tanta.

  • In 1950, Sheikh Al-Hosari became a reciter of the Ahmadi Mosque in Tanta, where he lived for years as a teacher and reciter of the Noble Qur’an.

  • In 1955 he was appointed sheikh of the Husseini Mosque in Cairo.

  • By a ministerial decision, Al-Husari took over the supervision of the Gharbia Governorate's readings.

  • In 1960, a presidential decree was issued appointing him a sheikh for all Egyptian reciters, and the Ministry of Awqaf chose him as an advisor for the affairs of the Noble Qur’an.

  • In 1968 he was elected president of the Muslim World Readers Union.

Al-Hosari excelled in memorizing and reciting the Qur’an at an early stage of his life, and he did not stay long until he studied the ten readings, and when he announced his recitation on the Egyptian radio in November 1944, that was the beginning of a long story of serving the Qur’an and calling for Islam and charitable work in all parts of the world.

And when some of the distorted Qur’ans spread in 1960, Sheikh Al-Husari was at the forefront of those who confronted this sedition, as he responded to the government’s call to implement the idea of ​​​​the registered Qur’an and refused to take compensation for it.

Several reports say that Sheikh al-Husari was the first reciter to record the entire Qur’an as recitation, and that was according to the narration of Hafs from Asim, and later he recorded a complete mushaf recited with the narration of Warsh on the authority of Nafi’.

For many years, Sheikh Al-Hussary was a member of both the Quran Review Committee and the Islamic Research Academy at Al-Azhar Al-Sharif.

From the Egyptian pulpits, Sheikh Al-Hosari moved to the world, reciting the Qur’an, calling to God, and benefactor to the poor and needy.

As president of the Muslim World Readers Union, Al-Hussari toured most of the countries of the Islamic world, visiting the Philippines, China, India, Singapore and other countries.

Al-Husari says, "I have visited all continents, and every time I come to a country I find my voice beats me to that place."

The call to prayer was raised at the United Nations headquarters, the Qur’an was recited in British institutions and the US Congress, and US President Jimmy Carter presented a copy of the Holy Qur’an.

His advocacy efforts to convert to Islam led several people in France and the United States.

Sheikh Al-Hosari left charitable projects and works, including the Al-Azhar Institute in Tanta and the Great Mosque in his village Shubra Al-Namla. He also recommended a third of what he left for charitable work.

On November 24, 1980, after performing the evening prayer, Sheikh Al-Hosari passed away, due to complications and heart problems.
