A new kind of trash can will soon appear in the Pyrénées-Orientales.

The presence of an orange bin, intended for bio-waste, will be tested in several municipalities around Perpignan, reports Actu Perpignan.

The towns of Villeneuve-de-la-Raho, Cabestany, Saint-André, Elne, Argelès-sur-Mer as well as the Moulin à Vent district of Perpignan will act as pilot sectors.

The generalization to the whole department is planned for 2023.

Compost and biogas

These orange bins will therefore accommodate biodegradable or organic waste: leftover meals and meal preparation, fruit and vegetable peelings, etc.

This will make it possible to better recover this waste through recycling, the production of compost, biogas or biomethane.

The question of the odors generated by these bins as well as that of a potential increase in the household waste tax arise.

Sydetom 66, in charge of waste management in the department, promises to provide more answers to residents very soon.
