Operations started on Monday morning.

On Kermabec beach in Treguennec (Finistère), scientists are busy around the carcass of the whale that has been stranded since Saturday September 10.

Teams from the Iroise Marine Nature Park are currently taking samples to find out more about the cetacean, found dead on Saturday.

This is the second specimen of this species of whale to run aground in Brittany in a week.

Scientists hope to be able to determine the reasons for the death of these two giant animals.

The animal is an adult measuring a little over 17 meters which presents "significant weight loss", according to state services.

“Hemorrhagic tissues are also observed on the flanks without it being possible at this stage to comment on the causes of the grounding”.

Once the samples have been taken, the carcass of the animal will be cut up "to be evacuated by land to a rendering center", the Finistère prefecture said on Monday.

Pending the end of these operations, the area remains closed to public access within a radius of 300 meters.

Access roads have even been closed to traffic.

As a precaution, the collection of shells is prohibited for at least 48 hours.

"This period may be reassessed depending on the assessment of the recovery of the media", specifies the prefecture.

On September 2, another whale was stranded on the islet of Kélaourou, in the south of the island of Sein.

As the area is difficult to access, the animal has not yet been able to be evacuated from the rocky plateau.
