Cities and municipalities have to arm themselves against further periods of drought, storms with heavy rain and hot summers.

The Federal Environment Ministry will provide information on how this can be achieved and what is already happening at the first nationwide "Week of Climate Adaptation".

Better protection against heat in social facilities

"This summer we had to realize that the climate crisis, with its dire effects on health, the environment, agriculture and infrastructure, has also reached us in Germany," said Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (Greens) at the start of the campaign week in Berlin.

"We are not yet sufficiently prepared in Germany," she warned.

During the action week, more than 200 events will show "how innovative and diverse climate adaptation can be".

Lectures, further training, city tours and activities for children are offered.

Better protection against heat is needed above all in social facilities, for example through greenery, the installation of windows with thermal insulation glazing or the installation of drinking water dispensers and the procurement of cooling vests.
