A man shot dead four people and injured three others in Memphis, Tennessee, according to local authorities.

As the police announced at a press conference on Thursday morning (local time), the 19-year-old alleged perpetrator opened fire over a period of about eight hours and in at least eight different places.

The first victim was shot dead on Wednesday afternoon, followed by a search of several hours for the man, who continued to drive through the city, until he was arrested in the evening.

There was initially no information about his motive.

The 19-year-old broadcast part of the crime live on Facebook, the police said.

He is in custody with no charges pending.

During the manhunt, police asked Memphis residents to stay indoors.

Bus and train traffic in the metropolis had been stopped in the meantime.

The mayor of Memphis wrote in a statement that it was a "senseless killing spree" and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

The US has long struggled with massive levels of gun violence.

Firearms are often readily available in the country.

According to the CDC, nearly 20,000 people were shot dead across the country in 2020 — more than 50 a day.
