The boreal summer of 2022 in Europe was the hottest on record, the European satellite monitoring service Copernicus announced.
The average temperatures were "the highest, both for the
month of August
and for the entire summer", and exceeded the records of 2021, which was the previous record, Copernicus said in its statement.
The month of August was the hottest on the continent by a "substantial margin", surpassing that of August 2021 by 0.4ºC.
This
temperature increase of 0.4ºC
was also registered in June and July.
"An intense series of heat waves across Europe, coupled with unusually dry conditions, led to a summer of extremes, with record-breaking temperatures, drought and forest fires in many parts of Europe," said Freja Vamborg, a senior scientific manager of the climate change monitoring system.

"The data shows not only that we had record temperatures in August in Europe, but the entire summer, and that the previous record was just a year ago," he added.
