The French have decided to travel more by bicycle.

Its use has indeed increased by 11% over the first 9 months of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021 and by 33% compared to 2019, according to the barometer published this Wednesday by the Vélo & Territoires network.

The resumption of face-to-face work boosts attendance

The use of bicycles in urban areas is notably experiencing a 14% increase in attendance compared to 2021 to reach an average of 1,299 trips per day and per meter.

Strasbourg, Grenoble, Nantes or Lille have experienced a sharp increase in the number of passages.

With the start of the school year, the counter on Boulevard de Sébastopol, the busiest in Paris, broke its record on Tuesday with 18,215 passages (in both directions), according to the town hall website.

This analysis is based on a national sample of 297 representative meters, analyzed by this association which brings together local authorities favorable to the development of cycling.

"Since the beginning of the year, the resumption of face-to-face work has 'boosted' attendance during the week, while the rainy weather during the winter holidays has negatively impacted attendance at the weekend", emphasizes Vélo & Territoires in a press release.

Attendance then continued to increase during the summer, even if it is difficult to compare the summer of 2022 and its high temperatures with the very rainy summer of 2021.

Who says "First Wednesday of the month", says "Bicycle attendance report"!

The most frequented tourist routes

In rural and peri-urban areas, cycling remains "fragile", specifies Vélo & Territoires.

The counters show -1% of passages in peri-urban areas and a stable figure in rural areas compared to 2021, but still up compared to the figures for 2019, before the health crisis.

"Probably more oriented towards leisure, (these practices) are more sensitive to the weather", underlines the association.

Cycling tourism is also progressing: use of EuroVelo routes, designed for long distance, has increased in France by 13% over one year.

After a mixed start to the year with unfavorable weather, attendance on these routes rose sharply in May and increased by 7% in July-August.
