There was a symposium to think about how teachers work, and the research institute of RENGO, which hosted it, argued that overtime work per month was well above the "death from overwork" line, and called for improvements in the environment, such as increasing the number of teachers.

On the 7th, the RENGO research institute "Rengo Life Development Institute" held a symposium in Tokyo for more than 9,000 teachers who are in charge of classes at elementary and junior high schools and high schools nationwide from May to June this year. We have announced the preliminary figures of the survey results of working hours.

According to the announcement, working hours per day on weekdays are over 12 hours, and overtime work per month is over 123 hours, far exceeding the so-called "karoshi line" of 80 hours per month.

In a panel discussion after the presentation, Takashi Murao, head of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Finance Division, who is in charge of reforming the way teachers work, said, "There are other survey results that show that overtime work is decreasing, but there are improvements in fixed numbers and club activities. I would like to take measures such as entrusting some of the work to the staff."

Professor Sawako Yufu of Waseda University Graduate School, who was in charge of the analysis for this survey, said, "Schools are making efforts to reform work styles, but the burden on teachers has not decreased because new educational content such as programming and English is increasing. It is necessary to urgently improve the environment, such as increasing the number of teachers."
