The Frankfurt biologist and managing director of the Frankfurt Zoological Society (ZGF), Christof Schenck, receives the German Environmental Prize, which is endowed with 500,000 euros.

This was announced by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) on Monday.

Schenck has been fighting for decades to protect wilderness areas from human encroachment, writes the environmental foundation.

His commitment applies in particular to the protection of national parks in the tropical rainforests of Amazonia, the Congo Basin and Southeast Asia.

He exemplifies “how the current global crises – species extinction and climate change – can be curbed with decades of consistent wilderness protection.

Protecting the last great wilderness refuges not only helps many different animal and plant species, but also people," said DBU Secretary General Alexander Bonde.

Schenck shares the prize with two entrepreneurs.
