The suspect in the fatal attack on a 25-year-old at a Christopher Street Day gathering in Munster has a criminal record for assault.

The 20-year-old had been convicted of several assault offenses in the past, senior public prosecutor Dirk Ollech told the German Press Agency on Sunday.

The man was taken into custody on Saturday – around a week after the act of violence in Münster.

The magistrate imposed the pre-trial detention on suspicion of bodily harm resulting in death.

One reason for this decision was the risk of repetition, Ollech said.

The "image" had first reported on the criminal record.

The 20-year-old is said to have insulted and threatened several women at the CSD meeting in Münster on August 27, including the words "lesbian whore".

When the 25-year-old asked him to stop the insults, the alleged perpetrator suddenly hit his fist at least once, according to the investigation.

The 25-year-old hit his head on the asphalt and died in hospital on Friday after an artificial coma.
