According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the corona incidences in Germany have decreased in almost all federal states and age groups in the past week.

"Only among schoolchildren has there been a slight increase in the last two weeks," says the RKI's Covid-19 report on Thursday evening, which mainly refers to the previous week.

In a weekly comparison, the nationwide decrease in incidence is almost 14 percent.

In addition to the incidence, which only very incompletely reflects the infection process, the RKI looks at a number of other indicators.

Data consistently showed that "even with severe diseases, the peak of the current wave has passed," it said.

According to the RKI, people over 80 are still most affected by severe illnesses: the decline in serious illnesses is currently slower for them than is observed in the overall numbers.

A random sample mentioned in the report suggests that in Germany almost all infections are now caused by the omicron subline BA.5.

Their share was almost 97 percent.

On Thursday, the European Medicines Agency EMA also gave the green light for two vaccines from the manufacturers Biontech/Pfizer and Moderna that have been adapted to the Omicron variant.

However, these are adapted to the omicron variant BA.1, but experts assume that these vaccines can also bring an advantage in combating the pandemic against BA.5.

"Low level of the Covid-19 vaccination rate"

Fewer and fewer providers and a small number of immunizations: In August, with almost 700,000 vaccinations in around 24,000 vaccinating offices, “the lowest level of the Covid 19 vaccination process so far” was reached this year. This comes from a monthly vaccination report by the RKI on Thursday For comparison from the summer of 2021: According to the report, 25 million vaccinations were carried out in around 53,100 vaccination centers in June. "The majority of the vaccinations currently administered are second booster vaccinations, while initial vaccinations are administered the least," it says.

The report assumes that more than nine million adults in Germany have not yet been vaccinated against Covid-19.

The number of adults who would have to refresh their vaccination protection with at least one vaccination is of a similar magnitude.

"Furthermore, unvaccinated people of all age groups have a significantly higher risk of developing a severe form of Covid-19 disease," is one of the conclusions drawn from the compilation of various data sources.
