A cactus that had been growing for two centuries in a park in the southwestern United States was torn from its trunk by heavy rains in the region.

Arizona state park authorities announced the sad news on Monday.

“Powerful seasonal rains can quickly impact the desert landscape,” Arizona State Parks explained on social media.

“The loss of this huge and iconic Saguaro [cactus] some 200 years old […] is a change that regular visitors to the park cannot miss.

Powerful seasonal rains can quickly make an impact on the desert landscape, like the loss of this huge, iconic ~200 year old Saguaro 🌵 at Catalina State Park in Tucson.

This giant fell off-trail last week and will provide habitat and food for many creatures as it decomposes.

An icon of the American West

A photo accompanying the publication shows the Saguaro, and its multiple arms, lying on the ground, its trunk torn off.

The tree was in Catalina Park, not far from Tucson.

“Fortunately, this giant fell off the trail and will remain where it landed, providing habitat and food for many creatures while it decays,” the park said.

The Saguaro cactus can reach more than 10 m in height and, waterlogged, weigh more than 2 t.

The plant, which grows in the United States and Mexico, has become a mythical symbol of the American West and the desert landscapes of Arizona.
